Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing these medications should be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened weight return.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

People who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful return of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and you become ravenous," said a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
